The study of matter at different scales provides us with extensive knowledge about it, from its macroscopic properties (visible to the naked eye, such as colour, shape, mass and hardness) to its microscopic properties (such as the arrangement of its particles, invisible to the naked eye).

We know what happens by means of two experimental techniques:

Direct observation. This requires the use of the correct instruments, such as an optical, microscopic or the more modern, scanning tunnelling microscope.

You can learn the history of microscope here.

Indirect observation. Through observable experimental evidence at the macroscopic scale, we can derive models and establish laws and theories that describe the behaviour of matter at a microscopic level.

You can learn about models in this video.
